Ampera needs to be taken seriously

CFC Solutions believes that electric vehicles, such as the Vauxhall Ampera, need to be taken seriously and not be treated as ‘environmentally friendly novelties.’

The Vauxhall Ampera E-REV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) is tipped to be built alongside the Astra at Ellesmere Port Cheshire and is due for release in 2012.

It boasts a an unprecedented 350-mile range due to this extended range technology, which sees a small petrol generator boost performance when the lithium-ion battery is depleted after 40 miles.

“Because the technology behind these vehicles is new to almost everyone in the fleet industry, the level of attention should exceed that of a normal car or van," continued the fleet software expert CFC Solutions.

The uptake of electric vehicles will be boosted in the UK by the Plug-In Car Grant that was confirmed by the government last month. Fleets in particular are expected to take advantage of this subsidy, which could see the Vauxhall Ampera priced at around £25,000.

The Vauxhall Astra – which shares its underpinnings with the Ampera – is available now from £13,995.
