Vauxhall Astra, Corsa among bestsellers in August

The Vauxhall Astra and Corsa placed in the top five bestselling models in August, according to a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders [SMMT].
As predicted, August saw new car registrations fall by 17.5 per cent to 55,305 units compared to 2009 when the scrappage scheme was at its peak. Despite this, Vauxhall’s British-built Astra was the third bestselling model of the month, with the Corsa one place behind in fourth.
1,906 Astra units were sold in total, which takes the year-to-date number to 53,449. The Corsa is just behind its Ellesmere Port stablemate with 51,147 units being sold so far this year. 1,629 Corsa’s were sold last month.
“The industry enjoyed a better than expected first half of the year and, despite the difficulties, SMMT is forecasting that new car registrations will close just ahead of 2009 figures," SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt commented.
The Vauxhall Corsa supermini and Astra hatchback are priced from £9,995 and £13,995 respectively. A new Astra Sports Tourer will join the line-up later this year.
