Vauxhall Astra Twintop Performance

There is a broad range of engine sizes available for the Astra TwinTop, helping to create a model range that provides something to suit most people. Starting with a 115PS 1.6 litre there is also a 140PS 1.8 and a 200PS 2.0 Turbo which has power in abundance for a convertible.

Interestingly it may be the diesel version of the Astra TwinTop which makes the most compelling case, with masses of torque (320Nm) giving it pulling power in any gear, being no slower than the petrol versions on the road and also offering better fuel economy.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Driving

Convertible cars need to be well designed in order to handle well, building torsional rigidity into the body which the roof would normally provide. The Vauxhall Astra TwinTop has definitely been designed well, feeling taut and lithe over uneven surfaces and around corners. There is plenty of grip available at the limit though drivers of the car are likely to be more comfortable at slightly lower speeds, where the TwinTop feels in its element.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Equipment

The specification offered on the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop is pretty good across the range, with electric windows, CD player and air conditioning standard throughout. Higher trim levels also include things like alloy wheels, rain sensing wipers and a remote control for the roof.

The convertible roof of the Astra TwinTop is worthy of note as it uses a three-piece design to minimise the space it uses and can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 18mph, with no levers or clips to release. Taking less than 30 seconds from start to finish it really is a remarkable piece of engineering.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Practicality

The Astra TwinTop is one of the most practical convertible cars available, with a boot capacity of around 440 litres when the roof is up, making it larger than that found in the Astra Hatchback. Even with the roof down the boot space is still around 220 litres, though at the touch of a button the roof will lift itself up by 25 cm to enable easier access to the space. Being a true 4 seater as well the Astra TwinTop is not compromised when it comes to carrying passengers.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Quality

Looking at the roof mechanism it is clear that good quality is inherent in the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop. Developed by the same people who created the roof for the Mercedes SL the workmanship and technical know-how that has gone into crafting it is clear to see. Across the rest of the car the usual levels of Vauxhall quality are apparent, with the use of good quality materials, good panel fits and a reassuring touch to the controls.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Safety

The Astra itself has a good safety rating, with the TwinTop further enhancing this with features such as roll bars – automatically popping up on some models – and a strengthened windscreen surround . With four airbags as standard, active head restraints and a pedal release system in the event of a crash the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop safety levels are reassuringly good.

Vauxhall Astra Twintop Running costs

Enjoying reasonable fuel economy, with up to 47.1mpg combined for the diesel and mid-level insurance groupings (8-12 excluding the 2.0 Turbo) the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop offers a great driving experience for a very reasonable cost. Factor in a 20,000 mile or 12 months service interval and strong resale values and the TwinTop makes a good case for itself.
